Why shell out the extra cash for something like an Antec TrueBlue480 when you can just as easily install LEDs inside your power supply yourself for cheaper? This HOWTO will guide you through doing that. For starters, you’ll need the following equipment:
*** As always, be careful when working with a computer's power supply. Neither the author, nor pimprig.com, nor any of its staff are responsible for damages caused by not reading the directions. ***
A view of my desk where everything will take place. Don’t forget to plug in the soldering gun right away to let it heat up and wet the sponge.
Begin by disassembling the power supply using the Philips screwdriver.
Be careful as you remove the top cover not to touch any of the internal components or to cut/rip out any internal wires.
If you are unfamiliar with power supplies, note the large capacitors—these you do not want to touch, even if the power supply has been unplugged for a very long. Set the power supply to the side for now.
Begin construction of the LED tail by slicing the end of the ribbon cable as shown to separate the wires.
Cut off the insulation with your utility knife, being careful not to cut off any part of the wire.
Next, cut off the tails of the LED, leaving about 5mm still exposed. Note that the cathode (-) is the flat side of the LED, or the side where the tail was shorter.
